Can You Put Epoxy Over Your Existing Countertops?
Quick Answer: Usually, yes. Leggari’s epoxy system is designed to go over existing laminate/Formica, tile, granite and other stone, concrete, and wood countertops. The catch: the old top has to be solid. Leggari’s data sheet says the surface must be structurally sound, prepped, and repaired first. Swollen particleboard, loose tile, or a cracked top gets fixed before anybody pours epoxy.
I’m Master Tech Scott with HomeWise Services. Most folks know me for appliance repair, but I’m also a Leggari Certified Installer, trained in Pasco, Washington. “Can you coat over what I’ve got?” is the first countertop question I get. Here’s the straight answer.

Which countertops can you epoxy over?
Leggari lists concrete, wood, laminate/Formica, stone/engineered stone, and tile as surfaces its epoxy is designed to resurface. Each gets its own prep, per Leggari’s countertop instructions:
- Most surfaces, laminate included: sanded and wiped clean.
- Granite and marble: the sealer has to come off first.
- Tile: grout lines filled and sanded smooth.
Prep decides most of the final result. That’s why this isn’t a weekend paint job.
How does epoxy go over an old countertop?
Not a how-to, just what you’re getting. Leggari’s system goes on in layers:
- The existing top, prepped
- A pigmented epoxy primer
- A metallic epoxy base coat plus highlights, where the look comes from
- A high-wear topcoat: Glaze Coat (Leggari says it “lays out like glass”) or urethane in high gloss or satin
I install Leggari’s countertop systems: the standard Epoxy Countertop kits, Stone kits, Concrete Overlay kits, and Exotics kits, in single color, flake, and metallic looks. You can browse them on Leggari’s countertop page.
Safety first: this isn’t a craft-store project
- Fumes and ventilation. The safety data sheet (SDS) for Leggari’s epoxy hardener carries a “Danger” signal word, says it’s harmful if inhaled, and says to use it only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. The EPA’s advice for products that give off VOCs: increase ventilation and follow the label. The SDS also says it may damage fertility or an unborn child, so kids, pets, and anyone pregnant stay out of the room during mixing and pouring.
- Skin and eyes. The SDS says the hardener can cause serious eye damage and allergic skin reactions. Leggari recommends rubber gloves, a respirator, and safety glasses when mixing or handling it.
- Heat while mixing. Leggari warns that mixed epoxy heats up a lot and can cause burns.
- Temperature. Leggari says not to apply below 55°F or above 85°F, and its products are interior-only. In a San Antonio summer, that rules out a hot garage or outdoor kitchen unless Leggari signs off.
- Damaged substrates. Water-swollen particleboard, soft spots, loose or hollow tiles, peeling laminate, and cracked or shifting tops need an assessment and repair before coating. Epoxy covers a surface. It doesn’t fix one.
What should you check before you call?
No tools needed:
- Press around the sink and the dishwasher. Feel for swelling, soft spots, or a raised seam.
- Tap the tiles. A hollow sound or a tile that moves means it’s loose.
- Look at the laminate edges and seams. Peeling or lifting needs attention first.
- Take photos of the whole top and any problem spots.
Found something? The repair just comes first, and I need to see it in person.
What I see on San Antonio jobs (field notes, not data)
Most tops people want covered are older laminate and tile that still work but look dated. The trouble is almost always around the sink and dishwasher, where water has worked under the seams. A top that’s solid everywhere else is often a good candidate once that’s fixed.
Top too far gone? Start with an inexpensive new top, then coat it
If the old top is swollen, rotted, or falling apart, you don’t have to buy granite or quartz to get a high-end look. A smart route is to have a basic, budget-friendly countertop installed, then let HomeWise do the epoxy finish over it. You get a fresh, solid base with no hidden water damage, and the coating gives it the custom look and a sealed, wear-resistant surface that holds up better than the bare budget top would on its own.
When should you call a pro?
Call if the check turned up damage, you’re not sure what your top is made of, or you want it done right. HomeWise does done-for-you installs in San Antonio and within 30 miles. I’ll tell you straight whether your top is a candidate.
FAQ
Can you epoxy over laminate or Formica countertops?
Yes. Leggari lists laminate/Formica as a surface its epoxy is designed for. It has to be sanded, clean, and solid.
Can you put epoxy over tile or granite countertops?
Yes. Tile has to be solid, with grout lines filled and sanded smooth. Granite and marble need the sealer removed first.
How long before I can use my countertop?
Leggari’s data sheet says at least 48 hours of cure before water contact, based on a controlled 70°F environment. Temperature changes that. A typical HomeWise countertop project takes 1–2 days to complete, and then you give it the full cure time before the sink and wipe-downs go back to normal.
Can I put hot pans on an epoxy countertop?
Use a trivet. Leggari’s data sheet rates its metallic epoxy and Glaze Coat for heat up to 150°F constant and 200°F intermittent, so anything off the stove or out of the oven goes on a trivet.
How much does an epoxy countertop cost in San Antonio?
It depends on the size and condition of your top, any repairs, and the system and finish you pick. Book a look and I’ll give you a real number.
